Participation of Chelmos – Vouraikos Geopark in adult educational program

Under the long-standing collaboration with the Environmental Education Center of Kleitoria-Akrata, Chelmos Vouraikos Geopark participated in a one-day action on March 12th 2014, organized by the Environmental Education Center of Kleitoria-Akrata, themed “The Chelmos – Vouraikos Geopark”. The action was based on the broader educational program entitled “Walking Stone by Stone”.  The participants were seven teachers (trainees) and 34 students from the high school of Kleitoria.

Chelmos Vouraikos Geopark was represented by Maria Kamilari (Biologist) and Panagiotis Rigogiannis (Forest Protection-Ranger) The former gave a presentation on the principles of the European and Global Geoparks’ Networks and the specific characteristics, the geotopes the projects and actions of Chelmos-Vouraikos Geopark in the area. The group of trainees and the students also visited the Cave of the Lakes, a prominent Geosite of the area and in addition they hiked the ecotouristic path of the “Black Lake-Lagada stream” where they got acquainted with the different geological formations and characteristics of the region as well as cultural sites eg. old traditional hostels for travelers etc.

The Management Body of Chelmos-Vouraikos, wanting to help to promote activities of alternative tourism, environmental education, protection and enhancement of the environment in its jurisdiction area, has joined the European Geoparks Network EGN and GGN global network in support of UNESCO since October 2009.
