GENERAL INFO: The Bauges Massif is located in the northern western Alps of France. The border of the Geopark perfectly fits with the existent Regional Nature Park ones. It appears as a rocky fortress with its highest summits in contrast of the outer crown of lower valleys, and as a preserved natural island.
CONSERVATION, EDUCATION & TOURISM: The Massif des Bauges Geopark is formed by folding of mesozoic limestones, shales and tertiary sediments leading to a structured landscape with conformable reliefs and inverted ones symbolized by perched synclines. The territory appears as a water tower supplying the two largest natural lakes in France with their numerous karstic networks, deep and narrow canyons and waterfalls.
The territory is rich in historical monuments, build with local limestones. Types of soils and exposures create qualify wines and cheeses granted with a denomination of origin. Natura 2000 sites and Wild Fauna National Reserve preserve natural heritage. All these attractiveness built a territory with a strong local identity.
The Regional Nature Park is working since 1995 for their two main complementary goals that are the preservation and the promotion of its natural and cultural heritage as well as the sustainable local economic development. The Geopark pursues these common aims by enhancing its geological heritage.
