
Celebration of the 70th UNESCO anniversary in Terras de Cavaleiros Global Geopark
70 years ago the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization – UNESCO was founded with the vision to personify the true culture of peace and the respect for the shared values between civilizations. Portugal became part of the UNESCO for the first time in 1965, left it in 1972 to finally re-enter in September 11th 1974. At the moment the organization counts 195 member states and 9 associates.
The Terras de Cavaleiros Geopark Association and the municipality of Macedo de Cavaleiros celebrate together UNESCO’s 70th anniversary with the “Geosciences and UNESCO – IGGP Geoparks Global Programme”.
The UNESCO, that till this day, just gave the support to the initiatives promoted in the territories recognized by the European and Global Geoparks Network, have now a specific programme that allows the integration and recognition by this organization.
On November 11th the anniversary will be celebrated by the Terras de Cavaleiros Geopark Association and the municipality of Macedo de Cavaleiros with a mega school “Magusto” (popular festivity with chestnuts), with all the students of the pre-school and primary schools of the Grouping of schools and the private schools of the Terras de Cavaleiros Global Geopark territory.
The event intends to show the importance of the Terras de Cavaleiros Global Geopark, a territory recognized by the European and Global Geoparks Network supported by UNESCO since September 2014.
