The Maestrazgo Cultural Park ( Spain)

The Maestrazgo Cultural Park is situated in the heart Iberian Mountains: these are Mediterranean middle mountains drained by Guadalope river and its tributaries. From the top - 1997 m &endash; to the bottom -480 m. &endash; Maestrazgo Cultural Park groups a big variety of geological structures and kinds of landscape.

About Geology, this is an area where mesozoic materials are predominant, being the biggest part of the geological structure. Tertiary materials are in several depressed areas, such as Val de Jarque, valleys of Mas de las Matas and Alcorisa, areas of Crivillén and Upper Guadalopillo; at the same time, tertiary materials are present in Sierra de Borden.

When talking about litology, strongly carbonated materials appear: limestone dolomitic rocks and marl: most of them appear in higher and middle areas in Maestrazgo. Argyle and sandstone crop out mainly in small depressions and valleys, coming from Lower Cretacic age or being filled with tertiary materials.

The strong folding suffered by mesozoic levels in central Maestrazgo, as well as erosion by river network, have produced steep areas, where canyons, crests and hillocks are the main image: this produces big geomorphological diversity and outstanding landscape beauty.

Hoces del Guadalope are remarkable: in this area, river runs along 15 km. in an area with enormous bioecological richness, and spectacular landscape. Organos de Montoro is another wonderful geological figure, composed by vertical saw-like crests: these are produced by diferencial erosion and river work.

In addition, calcareous rocks are favourable for endo-karstic processes; that is why caves and chasms are common in Maestrazgo. "Grutas de Cristal" in Molinos are particularly remarkable. These caves are an impressive natural phenomenon, wonderful landscape of stalactites, stalagmites and stelectites, covering walls, roof and soil in the cave, forming tree-like and excentric aspect, adopting the most varied colours, vectors and crystallization.
Geological Park in Aliaga is the most valuable example of geological heritage in Maestrazgo. The Park can be admired and understood by means of signposted pathways, guidebooks and guides.
This Parks is an exceptionnal observatory on the last 200 M. of years of our planet's history. Some of the footprints left by geological evolution on this landscape are unic elements, very well-valued by many scientists from both Spanish and European universities.

On visiting this park, Earth's history can be read, maritime transgressions and regressions can be re-built, many vegetal and animal species can be recognized, and both micro and macrotectonic strength can be recognized.

Mining Interpretation Centre is placed in Aliaga, a neighbourhood of Aliaga. Coal is within Lower cretacic areas, and it was extracted along XX century, being used for feeding a thermal powerplant that was closed in 1982. Mining created a whole lifestyle that continues alive in people, landscape and facilities.

Today, this lifestyle can be known and understood thanks to this Interpretation Centre, created by initiative of a local cultural society.
Fossil richness in Maestrazgo Cultural Park is seen in Paleontogical park in the village of Galve. There, dinosaours fossils and footprints, natural size reproductions can be admired. Galve paleontogical sites can be visited by means of signposted pathways and a museum where many pieces are exhibited. Fossils exhibited include some new species (such as Aragosaurius), as well as other dinosaurs, micro-mammals, flying reptils, crocodiles, sharks and others.
All of this can be found in a nice and varied geological landscape that can be seen in the whole Maestrazgo; that is surprising for everybody, as many geological processes can be recognized in a relatively small territory. Beauty and quality of natural heritage contributes to this feeling, as Maestrazgo contains many valuable ecosystems and species (pine forests, riverside forests, vulturs and many birds of prey, foxes,...): about 60% of territory is included within "Natura-2000" European network.

In addition, offer of cultural heritage is very impressive in Maestrazgo: there are 13 historical villages labelled as "National Monument", castles coming from the Middle Age, old countryhouses known as "masadas"... This outstanding heritage can be easily visited and known thanks to the turistic infrastructure, that includes hotels, guesthouses, and some campings and hostels. Springs, summer and the beginning of autumn are the best seasons for visiting Maestrazgo.
