Cabo de Gata – The House of the Volcano

Cabo de Gata-Níjar Geopark opened in 2007 “The House of the Volcanos”, the first geoturistical centre in Andalusia.
It is situated in Rodalquilar, at the Geopark’s heart and just next to the gold mines facilities.

The House of the volcano host four interpretative halls and a media room.

  • First hall: GGN and EGN corner. This room is dedicated to the Geopark initiative around the world and the importance of the Geodiversity.
  • Second hall: Andalusia’s Geodiversity, a short walk through the geoloy of this region. This hall introduces a lithoteque and the video-volcano spot, with twelve short geodiversity films (spanish and English).
  • Third hall: Cabo de Gata-Níjar Geopark. In this hall you can learn and touch the geology of Cabo de Gata. Also there is a small mineral collection, representative of the province of Almería.
  • Fourth hall: Rodalquilar, a mine of histories. The local mining history can be tracked from more than 5000 years ago.
  • The media-room allows to display documentaries related to the Natural Protected Area, Geology and much more, like film festivals or meetings for enterprises.

The House of the Volcanoes is also the center of the geological visitor program: Learning to read in the stones, that attends directly between 2.500 and 3.000 visitors per year.

Regarding free visitors, the House attracts about 15.000 visitors per year, coming from whole Europe.

The timetable is 10:00 to 14:00 from friday to Sunday.
Entrance is free and all the information on panels is offered in English too.
